Traveling Overseas During a Pandemic

Updated: May 16, 2021

2020 was a very challenging year when the world was introduced to the deadly coronavirus - COVID-19. This same virus will literally stop the world in its place affecting millions of people across the globe. Airlines were forced to ground, people were forced to stay home, schools were forced into digital learning, businesses were shut down or modified their operations to accommodate social distance. As of right now, the number of deaths that were resulted by the coronavirus is over 2 million and counting.

After a couple of months of complete shutdown, countries started to open up their borders and airlines were back in operations. Due to the lack of customers flying, flight tickets were super cheap. For instance, you can fly to Colombia for $57 and Dominican Republic for $75. So why not travel if you’re a risk taker. After a severe cabin fever and mental breakdown, I have decided to travel to Dominican Republic for a month then onto Colombia for a couple of weeks. There were protocols that I had to follow like take a Covid screening test before entering the country. Must wear my masks at all times throughout the flight, airport, transit and other public places. These mandates were forced by the police and curfew was enforced - 6pm during the week and 12pm during the weekend. Violating these mandates will result in fines and jail time.

While overseas, your typical travel experience will be a lot different to what you’ve experienced pre-covi

d. Restrictions, closures, and forced mandates will definitely affect your travel experiences if you let it. You can work around these circumstances and make the best of your travel. Plan accordingly and always have a succession plan. Stay in a facility where there are in-house activities, access to the beach or pool and make sure you have enough alcohol to sustain yourself. Plus get some sleep in the process.

Overall, the traveling during the pandemic was greater. I enjoyed the experiences and was able to do what I wanted to do. Although these countries were not completely operating at normalcy, I still had a good time, rested, ate well and entertained myself. Taking a break from the work grind was worth it, especially traveling overseas.
