Obesity and Black Men: Prioritize Health and Wellness while Traveling Abroad

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

Obesity has become a serious issue in the Black community in recent decades, with nearly 48 percent of adults being clinically obese. This is a result of various societal factors that contribute to an unhealthy lifestyle. However, the focus of this article is on Black men who are traveling overseas with health issues.

In the past 7 years, there have been cases of Black men who have passed away due to health complications while overseas in Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia. Many of these deaths could have been avoided if proactive steps were taken to address their health issues. It is common for Black men to ignore the signs and continue to travel just for the sake of having a good time.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Black men who are obese, followed by cancer, diabetes, respiratory disease, and kidney problems. To tackle this issue, we must address the root causes of obesity in Black men, which are poor diet, lack of exercise, sleep deprivation, stress, and depression.

Here are 5 tips to help Black men become the best version of themselves:

  1. Schedule regular check-ups with your doctor and seek medical attention immediately if you feel something is wrong.

  2. Aim to work out 4 to 6 times a week. Even a simple long walk or being active can make a significant difference. Try to average 10,000 steps per day.

  3. Change your diet and focus on macronutrients like protein, carbs, and fats. Avoid packaged and processed foods.

  4. Seek therapy to address and overcome any setbacks and challenges in your life.

  5. Travel as much as you can. It can be a therapeutic and refreshing experience for both your mind and body.

In conclusion, it is essential for Black men to prioritize their health, especially when traveling overseas. By addressing the root causes of obesity and implementing healthy lifestyle choices, Black men can become the best versions of themselves and live fulfilling lives.
