3 Weeks Road Trip through Dominican Republic

Updated: Sep 27, 2023

This past January, I have the gracious opportunity to spend 3 weeks in the Dominican Republic while working remotely. Not too often I will have this opportunity, so I decided to do a road trip (rented vehicle) across the country from Santo Domingo to Samana visiting multiple cities and towns along the way. Here is a rundown on the road trip:

  • Santo Domingo: Arrived into this via air and spent 2 days in Colonial Zone. While there, I visited a couple of historical sites as well chilled along the Malecon (boulevard on the coastline) and hit up a couple of upscale lounges. Checked out then took the bus ride up to the Northcoast.

  • Puerto Plata: Arrived via Caribe bus, which is the equivalent to our Greyhound. I relaxed and worked remotely in my Airbnb apartment near Malecon. while partaking in the local everyday life. Ah yes, rented my vehicle to drive around from that point on.

  • Sosua - Drove 45 minutes to this beach town and visited a couple of Ex-pats who currently operating businesses there. Spent some time at the beach after my workdays, while sipping on some Cuba Libre and Presidentes.

  • Cabarate: Checked into another Airbnb and continue to work remotely during the week leading to the weekend where I got some drone footage. Continue relaxed, but this time in my beachfront apartment walking distance from all the festivities.

  • Gaper Hernandez: One of the small municipal cities in the countryside. Spent a week in the campo area and lived like a local resident. It is a different experience living in the campo versus around other tourists with all sorts of conveniences. Yes, I had to boil my water in order to take a shower because I DO NOT TAKE COLD SHOWERS!

  • Rio San Juan: Continue to drive northbound and visited another area. Didn't stay long but chilled on the beach while eating Red Snappers, fried Plantains while drinking some Presidentes.

  • Nagua: Pit stop to partake another day at the beach as well as check out the local scene. At specific location, there is a river that is connected to the ocean. Interesting to see the connection between the two.

  • Samana: Continued our drive along the northcoast to Samana where this city has a significant history of African American former slaves who resided in this city over hundred of years. Relaxed in this area, eat some large snappers with rice and black beans with some plantains and Presidentes. Enjoyed the scenic view and if you come during the spring, you can go out for some whales 🐋 watching.

  • Constanza: After a 2 couple of day rest, I've decided to drive to the central region of Santiago, La Vega, and Constanza. The city of Constanza stood out the most due to its highest elevation in the entier island of Hispaniola as well as the coldest. Yes, it was chilly like 40 degrees compare to the coasts which 85 degrees. The drive up to Constanza was a serious hike up the mountains and somewhat nerve wrecking. However, after arriving to our destinatiom and seeing the amazing view, it was totally worth it. After a day in Constanza, we drove back down to La Vega for lunch and continue our drive to Santiago then back to Cabarate.

Overall, i had an amazing time crusing from south to north coasts and highly recommend a road trek traveler to do the same. Here is a video highlighting my travel experience
