12 Hours Layover in Lima, Peru

Updated: Dec 6, 2021

I have had an opportunity to do a layover in Lima, Peru between my travel trip from Bogota, Colombia to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This layover was over 12 hours between 6 am to 9 pm. I had the choice to either stay in the airport OR explore the city of Lima and see, hear, taste, and smell what this city has to offer for a potential trip.

Before I dive into this quick trip report, walking through Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, Peru was an experience by itself. Like really, I was stared at by locals which most of whom stood less than 5'5 feet tall. Also, I was amazed to see the daily customs and culture all around me. It was great to see and experience all of this while in the airport.

I decided to leave the airport, catch a cab to the Miraflores which is an exclusive residential and upscale shopping district south of downtown Lima. Checked into a trendy hostel with a private bathroom that only cost me $25 a day. After dropping off my backpack, I immediately went to the shopping district in Miraflores to have lunch, walk around the area, and entertain myself with a couple of activities. Walked around the shopping district area along the Pacific beachfront then went to get some food and drinks at some of the local eateries. I must say... the food and drinks were delicious and CHEAP! Some of the best cuisines that I ever had were in Peru. I spent more time going to restaurants and bars in Miraflores than sightseeing. I enjoyed my time so much with the locals that I almost forgot to head back to the hostel to wash up and get ready to catch my flight to Brazil.

Overall, I had an amazing time in Lima, Peru, and highly recommend this city for a weekend trip. Most definitely I want to come back and explore the city more as well as visit Machu Picchu. Will come back for sure!
